Konkani food Recipe - Jeere Meere Kadi (Coconut Cumin-Pepper curry)

Recipe Info:

A very popular and delicious Konkani dish. It's very simple to make. My mother makes this very often and serves with hot chapatti. In konkani, jeera means cumin seeds and meere means pepper. Kadi is a coconut based thick sauce. Posting this straight from my mother's recipe diary. This dish is very healthy and helps to reduce cough and cold.

3/4 cup Coconut grated, fresh and frozen;

3-4 Roasted red chillies;

Small ball of Tamarind;

1/2 tsp. Jeera seeds (Cumin seeds);

1/4 tsp. Cumin seeds;

1/4 tsp. Whole peppercorns;

Salt as per taste;

1-2 tsp. Oil;

5-6 Garlic pods;

Few drops Ghee.

How to cook?

  • In few drops of ghee fry whole pepper corns and cumin seeds till they turn slight brown. Allow them to cool on a plate.

  • To make masala, grind coconut, roasted red chillies, tamarind along with roasted cumin seeds and pepper for a smooth paste. Add water as required.

  • Add salt to taste and look for consistency.

  • Bring this mixture to a boil and continue to heat for about 3-4 minutes. Turn off the heat.

  • For seasoning, heat oil, add crushed garlic. Fry till it turns golden brown. Add this to mixture and mix it well.

  • Serve it hot with rice or chapatti.
