Chicken Shawarma is a popular street food in India, especially among children. Shawarma is typically made from marinated chicken that has been slow-roasted for hours on a vertical grill. After cooking, the chicken is carved into thin slices and stuffed inside pita bread with various sauces, chutney, and pickled vegetables.


Kids will go crazy for this mildly spicy, aromatic, and delectable Chicken Shawarma.


Preparation time: 15 mins

Cooking time: 15 minutes


Ingredients:

4-5 tbsp extra virgin olive oil or nomal oil;

1 tbsp chopped garlic;

1 tsp cumin powder;

½ tsp coriander powder;

½ tsp cinnamon powder;

½ tsp cayenne pepper powder;

1 tsp black pepper powder;

1 tbsp lemon juice;

salt to taste;

300 gms chicken boneless. I prefer chicken breast;

½ cup curd;

1 tbsp lemon juice;

1 tsp chopped garlic;

2-3 tbsp olive oil;

1 tsp red chilli flakes;

salt to taste;

½ cup sliced onions;

1 pita bread;

cherry tomatoes as required;

cucumber slices as required;

pickled carrots as required;

pickled beetroot as required;

lettuce leaves as required.


How to prepare:

  • Combine extra virgin olive oil, chopped garlic, cumin powder, coriander powder, cinnamon powder, cayenne pepper powder, black pepper powder, lemon juice, and salt in a mixing bowl.

  • Mix the chicken breasts in the marinade for 4 hours or overnight.

  • In a mixing bowl, combine thick curd, lemon juice, chopped garlic, extra virgin olive oil, a pinch of red chilli flakes, and salt.

  • Place the marinated chicken on a grill pan that has been heated. Mix in the leftover marinade with the sliced onions.

  • Place the marinated onions in a grill pan. Cook the chicken for 5-7 minutes before turning it over.

  • Transfer the chicken and onion slices to a plate to rest.

  • Cut the chicken into bite-sized pieces.

  • On the pan, warm the pita breads slightly.

  • Place pita bread, sliced chicken, caramelised onions, cherry tomatoes, cucumber slices, pickled carrots, pickled beetroot, and fresh lettuce leaves on a plate. To give it more taste you can spread mayoneese sauce on the pita bread.

  • Serve the shawarma wrapped in butter paper.
