Recipe Info:

Chainaki (Afghan for teapot) is a traditional South Asian recipe which is stewed and eaten all over Afghanistan. This recipe is cooked in a clay pot and tastes delicious. There are different versions of it when it comes to adding vegetables. Innovative and healthy recipe to try, this recipe is best served with Naan.

Preparation time: 30 minutes

Cooking time: 2 hours

Serves: 3


250 gms. Mutton (make sure you don't remove fats to make it more tender);

1 large Onion diced;

1 tsp. Turmeric;

1 tsp. Red Chilli powder;

1 tbsp. Vegetable Oil or Canola Oil;

2 dried sour Prune;

Salt as required;

3 cloves of crushed Garlic;

1 tomato chopped finely.

How to cook?

  • In a clay pot heat Oil. Add diced onion and fry. Make sure you do not over fry.

  • Add mutton and mix it well. The meat must have some fat for it to tender.

  • After 5 minutes add turmeric, red chilli powder and salt. Mix it well.

  • Add tomatoes and mix it very well.

  • After 5 minutes add garlic and stir.

  • Add water as required for mutton to cook.

  • Add 2 dried prunes and place the pot in oven for about 2 hours to cook. Make sure you cover the pot with aluminium foil to steam.

  • Chainaki is ready. Serve it with naan.
